Refrigerator Compressors - Some Commonly Encountered Problems

The fridge is the kitchen electronic appliance that helps keep our edibles fresh, preserved, and cool. One of the most important parts of the structure of a fridge is the compressor, which in most models is located inside the lower part of the back of the refrigerator. Its main function is to increase pressure and saturation temperature in the fridge to cause condensation of the refrigerant with the help of the condenser. The fridge compressor is quite an essential part of the assembly and the entire cooling mechanism. When this part of the cooling appliance becomes faulty, the fridge may not be able to keep your food and beverages cool and fresh anymore. In case it does manage to do so, it may not be efficient enough. It works in tandem with other parts and components of the fridge such as the refrigerant, evaporator, condenser, and expansion device to keep the cooling mechanism going.

Fridge Compressor Problems

Fridge compressor problems can range from a minor maintenance issue such as a dirty compressor to more complex problems that require an experienced technician to fix. Some problems actually require fixing as soon as they occur or you could be forced to buy a new entire fridge. To give you some inspiration, here are some of the most common problems associated with Refrigerator Compressors and ideas on how to have them fixed.

1. Compressor On & Off Clicking Problem

Another commonly reported problem by fridge owners is whereby the compressor tends to click on and off. Sometimes it won’t run or turn on at all. In such a case, there could be a relay or compressor overload problem. This is a problem that needs checking as soon as possible because if proper care isn’t taking, the compressor may end up bursting. In such a case, calling a repair technician may be the best solution. However, if you have some knowledge about electronics, you can use an amp meter to check the unit or take a closer look at the relay to see if some trapped dirt may be the root cause of the issue. You can also look for online guides on how to use the amp meter if you’re on a tight budget.

2. The Refrigerator Won’t Cool Enough

When you find that your fridge is not cooling enough, it can be a good indication that the compressor has some issues, even though this is one of the four possible faults in such a case. Before calling the repairman, you can check and test the compressor to see if it’s in good condition. It can be a bit tricky if you are not good with electronics and electricity, but you can do it by simply accessing the unit from the back side of the fridge and testing it using the electricians’ meter. Remember to unplug the refrigerator from the power socket before you attempt any checks.

3. Noisy Fridge Compressor

In most modern-day fridges, the compressor part is designed to keep silent or a produce a very low noise amount if any. However, the noisy compressor problem is quite common among fridge owners with a faulty unit. If the noise is coming from the bottom part at the back of the fridge where the compressor is located, higher chances are that it could be the compressor. Being the device that regulates pressure and gas in the unit, the noise produced could be caused by a higher than normal pressure or bad maintenance of gas in the fridge. In most cases, a noisy compressor will require replacement with a new one.

4. Fan Is Not Running

Last but not least, compressor fan problems are also among the most common in fridges. Just like with most other electrical and electronic systems, the main function of the fun in the fridge is to keep the unit cool and prevent damages that could be caused by system overheating. It is easy to tell whether the fan in a fridge is running or not. In case it stops running, the problem may require you to call and expert fridge technician to have it fixed ASAP.
